The present book is a revised version of my PhD thesis, written under the aegis of the Department of English, Babeş-Bolyai University Cluj, and publicly defended in December 2008. I therefore owe the greatest thanks to
my academic supervisor, Professor Virgil Stanciu, and to Professor Sanda Berce who closely read, encouraged and perspicaciously commented my work all along, helping it reach its final form. In the course of my research I benefited from the generous support of the Zurich James Joyce Foundation. The scholarships granted gave me access to the Foundation’s vast library and resources, but first and foremost, they enabled me to benefit from the continuous presence, incisive readings and inductive scrutinies of Fritz Senn.
