Lost Shorelines and Fragile Social Ties:  On Fishing Culture, Tourism, and Filmmaking in the Danube Delta

Authors

Oana IVAN (author)

Synopsis

Blending anthropology, environmental studies, and documentary filmmaking, this book offers an intimate portrait of life in Sfântu Gheorghe, a remote fishing village in Romania’s Danube Delta. Based on more than a decade of ethnographic research and filmmaking, it explores how local communities navigate the pressures of environmental conservation, tourism, market economies, and social change. Moving beyond romanticized images of the Delta as an untouched paradise, the author reveals the complex realities of those whose lives depend on its waters. Combining academic insight with personal experience, the book also reflects on transforming scientific research into the documentary film Lives among Waters. (Ro. "Vieți între ape").
